The word “home” means something different for everyone. For some, it’s a physical location and structure that holds all their memories. For others, it’s a thread of various places and people who are connected by that person’s state of mind.
Regardless of what drum corps audiences’ definition is, Colts look to explore what connects people back to home with their 2023 production, “Where the Heart Is.”
“We’re really tugging on the heartstrings this year and channeling home for our (60th) anniversary show,” Colts visual instructor Bridget Fleming stated.
The production includes selections from artists like Motley Crue, Pat Metheny and Cinematic Orchestra. The corps hopes to encapsulate several emotional levels that the audiences can latch onto while viewing the show.
One of the ways Colts plans on conveying the “home” state of mind is with prop street signs that have the different addresses and towns the corps will be performing in during the 2023 season.
“It’s been really creative seeing where the design team wants to take the show,” Fleming said.
As the Dubuque, Iowa corps celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2023, it also plans on building upon the momentum from the 2022 season when Colts became a “Top 12” World Championship Finalist for the first time since 2007.
This anniversary season has provided a unique bonding experience for everyone involved with the corps — which includes embracing the opportunity to create new history.
“Being able to be around each other and celebrate our history while continuing to push forward and create new history is how we’re celebrating this year,” Fleming said.
Colts have gotten off to a solid start to the 2023 DCI Tour, scoring 3.5 points higher this season at the Muncie, Indiana event on June 30 than at the same event a year ago. The 65.850 score was propelled by placing as high as fifth in the color guard and percussion captions.
“They’ve been working super hard,” Fleming said after the corps’ performance in Muncie. “I think the hard work is starting to pay off and that was evidenced by today’s run.”
This season’s start is, in large part, due to the positive mentality of the 2023 membership. Colts are hungrier than ever to put their best foot forward in every rehearsal and at every event.
“They have been so resilient and there’s a fire in them,” Fleming said. “They are ready to keep working and keep getting things done in order to see out the end of the season.”
