STANFORD, California — The Blue Devils extended their undefeated streak through six events on Sunday night, putting up the highest score to date on the 2023 DCI Tour while continuing to defend their ‘22 World Championship title.

A dozen performing groups spanning three competitive divisions took the field for DCI West at Stanford Stadium, which is annually one of the biggest West Coast events of the Drum Corps International Tour.

“It’s just such a great place to be,” Blue Devils tuba player Connor Carbonell said about pulling off a win on the corps’ Northern California turf. “We could really feel the crowd giving off energy, and we fed off that. It was a great run.”

Sunday night’s event featured a quartet of California SoundSport teams. Alisal Community Arts Network Marching Band and Alisal Union School District All-Star Academy were joined by Freelancers Alumni Corps and Spirit of Sunnyvale.

With all of the performing SoundSport groups having connections to the state of California, the Stanford event provides the group several opportunities to connect with the local Bay Area community.

“It’s really nice to have the drum corps family together,” Freelancers drum major Paul Zimmy said. “During COVID, we didn’t have that for awhile, so it’s nice to have it all back.”

10 of the 11 competing corps will head to Roseville, California for the DCI Capital Classic on July 10. That event kicks off at 6:30 p.m. PT. Vessel will be back in action on July 11 at Resound in Bakersfield, California.
